My new set up Esprit and AZ8.

Recommended Posts

After a two month wait my new mount arrived today. It's a Losmandy AZ8 . I must admit the packaging left a lot to be desired there was no bubble wrap at all on the tripod and it does have a few little scratches because of this. The mount itself was not to bad had polystyrene cut outs for the mount to rest in.

Easy to set up and easy to control. Vibrations settle in just a few seconds and it takes the weight of the Skywatcher 120ED Esprit well.

Manual controls of course and the azimuth one works really well no vibration at the eyepiece at all. The azimuth one works well in raising scope but there is a slight vibration in lowering scope, only slight but it's noticible I will have to investigate further.

Overall I'm pleased and after a few tweaks this will be a very good grab and go mount.

I also tried out my new Baader Herschel Wedge and even though the sun was quiet with only one sunspot it worked fantastically, I'm very pleased with it.

Here's a few photo's.

The last photo's shows the scratches and some paint loss, and little dent in one of the supports, what would you do, complain or leave.

Nice.

Personally I would complain, even if you are not that fussed, if you don't tell them they will keep shipping more of these how they shipped yours, they will never learn if they do not know!

Hope you enjoy the views!

Very nice Mick - congrats :)

As for the scratches and chunks, I think I'd either want a good discount or a perfectly new product. You didn't buy a second hand rig after all.

I agree guys.

I have sent photo's to the shop I bought it from.

Only problem is they are in Germany as no British shop stocks these yet.

Lets see what they say.

Do you think it was bumped between the factory and Germany (via the US?),  or between Germany to you ?

Did TS inspect it at Ransberg before they shipped it to you i wonder ?

If it was me, i'd probably live with it, and try to touch it up.

But, you've done the right thingy telling them, and showing them the damage.

I'm sure TS will see things right if you go down that route.

I have an account with TS myself, and use them a lot.

Just had a small adapter arrive today actually. Only took 3 days from ordering to receiving !

The mount looks very nice however, nicely engineered.

It looks an easier to move setup than my DM6.

My back let me know 'that it wasn't happy' the other night when i lugged it up the garden  :o

And those slow-mo controls you have there look like you may be able to add a motor on to them, if you wanted to, further down the line.

Great set-up   ; glad you like the Herschel wedge too  :)

Hi Rob.

I'm not sure as the tripod box is a proper Losmandy box as it has writing on it but the tripod was not secured in the box, in fact there was no bubble wrap, no polysterene cut outs, nothing the tripod was just floating in the box.

I can't see Losmandy sending out their kit with no protection.

Was it even a new tripod, it could well be a shop display, I don't know.

Nice Mick. A 5" triplet takes alot of beating. You will love planetary through that.

Its cosmetic and not structural but I would complain strongly and see what they say. Is it TS by any chance? They have a good reputation.

What a lovely setup.

I'm sure you will get some recompense for the damage.

Sweet looking set up Mick, that should keep you happy for a while.

And yes complain, you have paid a tidy sum for that lot. Would you take a new car off the forecourt with scratches on it?

They agreed it was damaged and offered me

1) A new tripod which will take 5 weeks as no stock but can use old one till new one arrives.

2) 100 Euro cash back

3) 120 Euro voucher

Have some thinking to do now.

Thats a fair outcome i reckon.

I'd be tempted to take the voucher.

How has the tripod (and mount) performed so far....?

You could always upgrade the tripod and use the voucher for that...?

I'd go for the voucher as well.

There will soon be some upgrade or accessory you just absolutely must get. :)

The mount and tripod is perfect to use and had performed flawlessly the 3 times it's been out. It's only the tripod that has a few scratches on it and they can be touched up with some paint.

Glad you're happy with the result Mick - it's always worth a shot at complaining. :)
