Flip mirror diagonal

Hi folks.

I've been looking at these to make image finding and focusing easier and wonder if anyone has any experience of them. There is a good tutorial on you tube on the BrightStar version.

But these are no longer available!!! However, the Sky-Watcher version looks the same.

I like the helical focuser feature so you can parfocalise your EP with your camera. The brightstar one is also collimatable so you can centre up your optical and camera views to match.

Does anyone know if the BS and SW ones are the same?  And any other advice please.

Thanks

Alan.

Yeah I used to have one the BS version. They are useful for centering Planets when doing planetary imaging. However as I got more experienced I found it easier to centre the planet without one so sold it on as I had no real need for it anymore and the less you have in the image train the better. They are much of a muchness when it comes to brands. You will probably find they are both made in the same factory if you were to look into it.

i found them very useful when using my celestron 8" se and a small chip webcam or asi 120 camera, especially if you intend to use a barlow lens in the imaging train, i had the meade 1.25" which has a eyepiece attachment that you can parfocal with the camera which is very handy also.

if your interested in one i might have it for sale if you wish to PM me.

Hi Rob. That is exactly why I want one, It's a devil of a job finding a planet and if the focus is a bit off you can have it in the frame and not see it. Is your one the same as that in the video and has it got the adapter to take a web cam with a 11/4" nosepiece?

Thanks.

Mine is the Meade 644 flip mirror which can be used with a 1.25" nosepiece or T 2 screw fitting.

I used it on the back of my celestron 8" sct.

I'm not sure how that would mount onto my refractor. I need a 11/4 or 2" push fit.

Robs will work as it has a 1.25 inch nose so will fit your refractor fine.

I have a Vixen flip mirror and have used it on both my VC200L and Equinox 80.

I found it especially useful when using parfocal rings on the ep, reducing the amount of refocusing (although it took a bit of time getting it set right)

  • 2 weeks later...

Ordered a Sky-Watcher flip mirror diagonal from Tring. It arrived today and looks exactly the same as the Bright Star one in the video. It has collimation screws and a lockable helical focuser so I should be able to match my view and focus to make planetary imaging a lot easier. Sadly I won't have a chance to try it for about 3 weeks as I'm away on hols and can't fit all the necessary stuff in the car.
