Morning all,

I thought I would check out EMAS after posting my ‘I’m new’ post on SGL. Someone mentioned EMASA, so here I am!

Bit of background – I’m a 38 year old IT Project Coordinator living in Derby (originally from North Norfolk). I live here with my long suffering partner Charlotte, and our two amazing children, Alexandria (14) and Joseph (7 ½!). I have recently re-found my love of astronomy. About 10 years ago I was the owner of a Helios 150 on an EQ3. At the time I was city bound, and couldn’t get away from the LP. I got frustrated, it didn’t get used, and ended up selling it. Ten years later, and I have now passed my driving test (late starter –I only passed 7 years ago!!) so can get to dark skies. My son also has a keen interest in all things space, so I thought now was a good time to get another scope.

So, hi everyone – I hope to be an active member here, and get over to Belper at some point in the not too distant future!

Cheers

Nige

Hello Nigel welcome to EMS.

I used to have a caravan at Heacham in North Norfolk, and I go birding loads around there, simply an awesome place.

Hope you enjoy your time here.

Thanks for the welcome! Nice to know there is a local group in the Derby area, and I hope to get involved as best I can! While not a total 'noob', I am sure I will need guidance and help along the way lol!!

Doc - Heachem is a lovely area. I grew up in Wroxham (Roy's?!?), on the Broads. I do miss it, and being so close to the sea!

Hi Nigel, a warm welcome to EMS.

Do you have an idea of what scope you might be looking to buy? Things have changed fairly dramatically in the last ten years, in fact the amateur market is chock bang full of choices now.

It really depends on your budget and what direction you want to go down, ie. Visual or imaging, or even both. There are some really good scopes available now, and a well looked after secondhander  is worth considering. Have a look round on here to see what the second hand market is doing.

Failing that, feel free to ask. There are some three legged donkeys out there,  we would want you to be happy that what you paid for is worth it and suitable for what you want.

Thanks for all the welcomes! Nice to be part of the community!

@Tuckstar – yes, I know Kelling Heath very well! Not had the pleasure of going to one of the star parties yet though. Hope that changes in the near future!

@Baz – Things have indeed changed, and for the better. The amount of stuff available is mind bending, and in someways makes things more difficult! I already have a mount – an EQ3-2. I plan to add the RA/DEC  motors to it at some point, and use it as a cheap and cheerful DSLR widefield mount. I am still weighing up my options for an OTA. I think to start with I am looking at a SW 102 ST. Nice and compact, and can be popped in the boot when we go on our hols.

Longer term, the dream would be to get set up for DSO AP. For that I would be looking at the SW 130p-ds, on a HEQ5. I can then use the 102ST as a guide scope. But that’s way in the future yet lol!! To begin with, I want to get out under the stars and relearn all I have forgotten!!
