Evening folks.

As a lover of binocs, i've been looking for something like this for a while.

Never looked through 7 x 50's before.

They promise a 7.3 degree FOV  :)

I may be pushing it with the exit pupil a bit, but we'll see.

I have sourced a pair on UKABS second hand. Here's the ad if you want a look :

I can't wait to try them out at a dark site.

But what i'm really hoping for is a leap forward in optical quality compared with my Canons.

We shall see. I will have them in a few days..... :)

They have an excellent reputation Rob and are a favourite of a lot of astronomers.

With a field of view of 7.3° they should be really good.

Fingers crossed.

The new Fujinon 7 x 50s have arrived.

Well , i say new : they are actually 13 years old. But lovingly cared for by one careful owner.

They are in really nice condition. Pristine even.

Last night and tonight, i had a quick first light with them in the back garden.

Light pollution is pretty dire at home and throw a full moon into the mix........

But here's my thoughts......and i'll compare them with my Canon 15 x 50s

Pro's

Fantastic build quality. Absolutely rock solid.

Optically on another level from my Canon 15x50 is.

Expansive 7.3 deg field of view

Stars are very sharp and are presented in a lovely flat field. (the star shapes in the Canons look a bit odd in comparison)

Nice soft, and very comfortable eye cups. The Canons are much firmer, hard even.

Amazing colours in the stars.......especially considering the light pollution / full moon.

Nice leather case, and 4 lens covers. ( Canon fall way short here.....only 2 lens covers and a naff case)

Comfortable to hold.

Individual focusing for each eye. Theres no centre focuser.

Cons

They are a bit on the heavy side, but i don't mind that.

The Canons are pretty heavy too, but for a reason.

Despite me being a regular gym goer my arms started to tire after a few minutes. But practise makes perfect.                                                                                                                           (Also one must remember these bins are only 7x magnification. Low mag & wide field and great optics are what i want.)

A 7mm exit pupil is probably a couple of mm too big for my 48 year old eyes.... :(

But the main 'Con' is no image stabilisation.

This is what makes the Canons really shine. If these Fuji's had it, it would be a perfect combination.

But at 7x mag, it's not quite so critical.

What i'm looking forward to doing now, is to get these Fujinons to a dark site, on a clear moonless night, to give my eyes a chance to get the best out of them.

I shall do a comparison with the Canon's and report back.

But i'm pretty chuffed with these binoculars. A great addition to my bino collection  :)

One or two images......
