Fast loosing the will

Graham

Recommended Posts

I for one am fast loosing the will down here.

The clouds rolled in on the night of the Luna eclipse and they are still here.

If you look at Sat 24 there is a thin ribbon of thick cloud running from the London area arcing across Suffolk (Ipswich) and out into the north sea.

After settling in this position last Sunday it has not moved an inch.  :wallbash:  :wallbash:  :wallbash:

There have been clear skies to the north of it and clear skies to the south.

I don't know what I have done to warrant this, it is not like I have purchased any new gear or anything,  :screwloose:  :screwloose:  :screwloose:

I know we all have cloudy spells but this so local and defined it is just taking the biscuit.

I would not mind so much if it did something like RAIN :sorry: but it doesn't it just sits there dull grey and bloody annoying.

Well that's my rant over.

I hope you folks up there are enjoying the clear skies.

What did you want to say all that for Graham with EMS4 looming, it's cloudy here now and the forecast is even gloomier!!

After all dear chap, this is England! ;):)

It's pretty good at Mansfield, it's only cloudy 6 out of seven days generally, and cloudy on important Astro events.

The eclipse was partly ruined by cloud here as well. I've learned the hard way that it is best to observe and snap as much as possible during the clear spells. There will always be cloudy spells when you can catch up with image processing. For the last year or so, I have been reprocessing old solar hydrogen alpha photos. Sometimes I look at what people are doing with the Daystar Quark, etc when I haven't been able to get anything better than a PST but I'm finding a lot of detail in my old photos.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Just how this country managed to produce so many eminent astronomers throughout history baffles me, given the normal state of our weather.

Alan.

What drives me mad is the weather forecast. This week on the BBC weather forecast the presenter has been saying clear skies and the map behind show not a cloud over the Midlands from about 21.00 for the last few nights and each night my eyes only see clouds lol.

No the uk has progressively got cloudier. Even in my life time things have got worse. Back in the seventies when I was doing white light sunspot counts my diary shows I was regularly getting 3 to 4 days of clear skies.

But there was not as many people buy scopes then and putting the curse of a new scope syndrome on us all, i.e cloudy skies lol

Climate change seems to driving the jet stream ever further South which means the clear (ish) stays well south of the UK and the cloudy weather which used to be North of Scotland most of the time is now over the UK! That's my theory anyway+ more jets trails than ever before?

Cheers

Well I disagree - I think the skies ,in general ,are better - post 85. Up to then I can remember driving up the A46 ,from Leicester to Nottingham, on numerous occasions per year in Oct thru Mar when you couldn't see more than a couple of meters due to Fog and I had to open the side window and listen for traffic noise.  When did we last have a "pea souper" like that ?

During the rest of the year I needed my fishing umbrella more often than not. :D

The post war clean air acts helped no end !

Agree with Ron that the sky was more vivid during 9/11 and the Volcano panic but then if the weather had been different you may have not seen it - it was a coincidence we had a clear days of weather - it didn't make the weather better.

With respect, I don't think sunspot counts are always a good indicator. I check for sunspots around 4-5 times a week but am often able to see them under quite poor conditions. One year, I counted 180 days that I either checked sunspots or something after dark.

Err I wasnt talking about sunspot counts Phil,

my point was the frequency of consecutive cleardays in my log, the fact that I was doing counts at the time has nothing to do with it except thats where I was recording the weather. I didnt mention spot numbers at all
