Converter types....any good?

Have been looking on the net about folks various experiences with x2 converters for astro work.

The normal type fits between the camera lens and the camera.  There is another type

(cheap to buy, so maybe cheap results !), which screws onto the front of the camera lens using its

filter attachment thread.

Some AP folk actually use two, x2 converters at once to get x4 although this knocks exposure by 4 stops.

Does any one here use converters of any type and what have been your experiences with them?

Thanks.

I have tried the x2 and x0.5 for the front or a standard lens and they work ok for normal photography but mine produce very bad coma when used for AP.
