DSLR Sensor cleaning

If one puts a Canon DSLR sensor cleaning to automatic the sensor gets cleaned every time the camera is used.

With manual one can clean as required.

So how often should this be?

Does too much cleaning lead to any problems?

So auto or manual?

Thanks.

It's a ultrasonic cleaner. The mirror vibrates to loosen dust. I'd check the manual but as far as i remember it occurs at every power on and off with the newer Canons.

My philosphy is

If theres dust on it, clean it, if not dont.

Occasionally Ive left the auto cleaning on but dont really bother because I try to keep caps or lenses on as much as possible to avoid dust getting in.
