Observing sunspots through binoculars

I wonder if I am the only person around who is doing this. I simply made some filters for my binoculars using Baader film and record the positions using computer based drawings. Quite often there isn't time or conditions do not permit photography.

If you follow my blog, I usually catch sunspots on nearly every clear day:

I made some filters for my binoculars and they are really good for a quick look.

Hi Pete,

Do you monitor the sunspots often? I will do some photography but quite often it isn't clear enough.

Hi Phil,

I don't monitor sunspots, but do have a look now and then. My interests are more towards much fainter stuff.

I now have a 5" filter which fits my ST120, and intend to use it on the sun more often for a more detailed view than the bins.

I prefer to photograph the Sun in white light as well as hydrogen alpha but it needs squeaky clean optics to do so. Also, I do a lot of my drawings when there is cloud about and it is simply not possible to take a photo. I feel a rough drawing is better than no record at all.
