Next Meeting Thursday 29th January 2015

Recommended Posts

Our next meeting is on Thursday 29th January at 6:30pm. The speaker for the night will be Mr M. Perkins of the school with a talk entitled “A Beginners Guide to Astro-Photographyâ€. We shall look at the basics of what it is and how to get started. We shall have a look at some simple projects to try with your own cameras and also move into a little Planetary imaging using a webcam as requested by a couple of our members towards the end of last year. We shall round off with a brief look at CCD cameras. After the talk there will be chance if clear to do a spot of comet hunting, if not there will be a brief what’s up / news report.

A reminder that memberships are now due. The cost for 2015 is a very reasonable £15 for the year, forms available in person at meetings or can be emailed if you let us know you would like a copy. Non-members are of course still welcome for the usual suggested donation of £2 towards costs for running the society.

Last night’s Long Eaton Astronomical Society was presented by Mr Mike Perkins of The Long Eaton School with a talk entitled “A Beginners Guide to Astrophotographyâ€. Mike began by taking us through exactly what is Astrophotography, the range of options available for imaging in the nights sky and of course wowing us with a few shots of his own. To follow, he explained how we could do it too by revealing handy hints and tips for setting up our own cameras [don’t forget the magic number 41] and of course the equipment and software we would need. The final section of the talk consisted of a discussion about CCDs and how they compare to DSLRs before finishing with a health warning; your social life will never be the same. As always Mike delivered a witty and informative presentation and hopefully we will be able to persuade him to deliver a part 2 later in the year.

Despite the snow earlier in the day and rather chilly weather the meeting was well attended by members old and new. Thank you to those who attended.

The next meeting is on February 26th 2015 with the usual start time of 6:30pm where we will have Dr Alan Wood from Nottingham Trent University alongside some of his students who will be delivering talks on “The Polar atmosphere at GPS†and “Stars and Galaxiesâ€.

Memberships are now due for 2015 at the rate of £15 for the year. Membership forms available from the next meeting.
