Had a play with my new Ze25GT mount (bought from Altair Astro and delivered as requested. Thanks).  It is so light and compact.  The quality of build is impressive including the plastic mouldings being of a high quality.  Bearing in mind I’m testing its limits by hanging a 200 Newt from it, it is very stable (for visual).  It took awhile to get used to the tensioner/gear lock system to balance the OTA and having done all that I forgot to mark the positions so will need to do it all again. Doh!

I tried slewing at 64x and it is very quiet with no shudder or wobble when stopping.

Next step is a clear night for polar aligning and some observing.  Shall let you know.

Ok  I think i've managed to link this to a dropbox folder with pics.  Not 100% convinced it will work.

I seemed to have got this wrong as it goes to my account.

Copy the image file from your Dropbox Camera Uploads folder into your Dropbox Public folder.

Right click the image file in your Public folder. A new menu will appear, click Dropbox, then click "Copy Public Link".

Go to the EMS reply box. Click the small rectangular image icon in the menu bar above the reply box. A little box opens up titled "Image Properties". Right click in the URL entry box and paste the URL (Public Link) into it and click OK.

The image should then appear in your post.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got a short period to set up this mount.   For some reason there was no GPS signal so needed to enter location details manually.  A simple enough task.  As Polaris is easily visible from the garden I was able to use the built in polar scope to align.  Another fairly simple task as it turned out, apart from the obligatory crouch to view through the polar scope.  All set up I decided to test the select and slew function.  I chose nearby Dubhe from the menu and smoothly and quietly the scope slewed and stopped.  But not at Dubhe.  On the opposite side of polaris and nowhere obvious.  Decide to recheck polar alignment and balance while I was about it.  Tried again. Same problem.  I decided to try another target, Betelgeuse.  This time the mount didn’t move at all. It was as if the controller was defunct.  In despair I packed up and went in for a sulk.  Then I had my eureka moment.  I had entered the time as 08:05 instead of 20:05 and so at that time Dubhe was on the opposite side of Polaris and Orion was below the horizon.  The mount works fine it is me that doesn’t. Durr!

I think everyone has done that at some point and thought the kit was faulty :)

So easy to mess up getting used to new equipment.
