Stellarium catalogs

As most of you know, I am interested in searching out DSO's, sometimes from some of the slightly more obscure catalogs. I find there is a lot more variety up there than you might think, and especially with star clusters there seems to be a lot of very interesting stuff that is reasonably easy to view beyond the usual Messier and NGC catalogs. Some of these objects are a little uninspiring visually, but others are well worth seeking out. I now have some really good deep sky atlases (paper ones) that plot many of these slightly more obscure objects, and found myself wishing that these were plotted on Stellarium allowing one to zoom in and examine them more closely. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that they are included in Stellarium :)

You can enter them in the search box just like Messier or NGC and be taken straight to them. There is no circle or marking to denote them, but if it is a cluster, the stars are there, sometimes needing zooming in to allow proper examination. I checked this out by doing some searches for objects shown in my paper atlases, and compiled this list of catalogs included in Stellarium. These catalogs contain varying numbers of objects from about 6 to several hundred. There are probably even more catalogs included, but I ran out of patience and got bored towards the end of the following list :)

That's an impressive list Pete, and good that stellarium recognises them too. Worth bearing in mind.

By the way, I don't know if I am doing something wrong in stellarium, but it does not recognise comet lovejoy, even if I call it by it's proper name of C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy)?

If you type in C/21 then it stops finding anything else! I have enabled comets etc in settings - anyone any ideas?

Cheers

Steve

Stephen, I think you need to go into solar system manager and update comets from the Internet. That should sort it out for you.

I wish it would search and find comets without typing the full title with the numbers, I can't always remember the numbers :)
