I have two identical old laptops.  Dell latitudes 610d both running XP with SP3.

One has an older 3.0.2 version of backyardEOS installed and a Canon 650d  connects on most occasions.

The other laptop has the new 3.1.3 version of backyard installed and the same  camera will not ever  connect at all.

When not connected it doesn't show on the laptop's drive list either as it does when connected on the other 'good' laptop.

Any ideas, Guys?

I tried the new version of BYE on the obs pc running XP and had nothing but grief from it.

Ditched the new version and went back to using the old one, never had a problem with it before or since.

Well thanks for that, Graham.

Seems like it's a case of, "Improvements for the worst,"

something  I am finding on many so called improvements on many things these days.

XP to W8 being a classic. :D

Hi guys, Guylain here, creator BYE.

Can you please report this issue on my own support forum?

If issues like this are not reported on the proper support forum I can't fix them because I'm unaware of them!  I can only try to address issues I'm aware of :)

I have several 100's users using the 650D, including myself, I have 2.

Thank you

Guylain

2 identical laptop does not mean ther are equal, both may have different drivers, etc...

Please try 3.1.x on your laptop where your 3.0.x is working and see if that works.  Use the came USB cable.

Please report your findings an my support forum.

Thank you for choosing BYE.

Regards,

Things are getting complicated.

Now even on the working version the camera1.exe doesn't now launch so I am using

camera2.exe to launch.

Camera1 seems to have lost the .exe at the end for some reason !

I have the older version on a W8 laptop too (which I paid for) and it is this that was copied onto

the XP laptop that worked until yesterday.

If I knew what I was doing computer wise, that might help somewhat. :D

I recently wasted time trying to download a trial version of the older version for the second laptop and the key given  didn't work.

Was told key only works on new version which is the version not working.

I guess buying old secondhand laptops doesn't bode well. :(

I have a canon 450 which I tried this morning and it works on both old and new versions of backyard,

using the SAME USB leads as before.

SO, it may be something about the 650d causing the trouble.

The 'root element missing' has been solved by a complete re install of version 3.0.2.

Why that element went missing only the Gods know, and they ain't tellin' me. :)

Hmmm, sounds odd.

Have you logged all this on the EOS support page that Guylain has given you?

If anybody should be able to help, it's the creator of Backyard EOS.

Well Darren, when I sort the camera out I will.

But maybe I should get myself sorted first............

..........Due to old age (that's quite a good excuse!) I mixed up my camera numbers up.

It's a 600d not a 650d.   That might be the problem.

PS.......When I try to launch Camera1 now on the older version a notice says, "Root element missing."

This has been asked and answered a few times already on my support forum :)

http://www.otelescope.com/index.php?/topic/453-error-loading-by-eos/?hl=%2Broot+%2Belement#entry3340

Basically Windows has messed the configuration file, you need to re-install in a different folder and problem solved.

Yes, as I previously mentioned a complete  re install did the trick.

There's no doubt that my 600d camera is the culprit now as the 450d works OK on both backyard versions.....

....works with all lengths of various USB leads too. :)

When I find the answer will post it on the backyard forum.

Thank you... and yes please come back with the solution once you get the 600D working.  It will help others in the future and/or it will uncover a bug I need to fix.  Either way everyone wins.

One thing you could try is EOS Utility with your 600D... and see if you get the same issues.

Thank you
