So.... I keep seeing these lovely things "Equinox 80" come up for sales at reasonable prices.. and I am getting tempted to get one!!

I already have a ED80pro and love it !!!

so my question is... is there a real noticeable difference with the images taken or is the improvements so minor its not worth the change??

Thoughts please??

The quality of the optics is near identical but the focal length is different so your field of view would alter. The ED80 is 600mm f/l the Equinox is 500mm, the ED80 is f7.5 and the Equinox f6.25

By that comparison you might expect the colour fringing to be slightly worse in the Equinox but not much and the speed to be a bit faster which is always nice for astro photography. To be honest I would not bother changing to the Equinox from the ED80, rather I would save up and change to a good triplet or quad, or a high end doublet.

a triplet would be nice but i think there's a lot of hype over these and a big price jump, maybe a nice idea if you have a osc camera but what's the real point of a triplet if your narrowband or LRGB imaging, a nice doublet will do just as well, you focus each channel to it`s optimum so i would say horses for courses, a faster scope is always a good advantage to have to a point, too fast and you start having other problems, but there are lots of other factors to consider also like light pollution or sky quality and camera sensitivity.

my advice would be buy the best mount you can afford first, secondly the best camera and then the optics come last.

If you are imaging with the ED80 you ought to have the reducer/flattener for it, especially if you are using DSLR. That brings the scope down to f6.375 and corrects the focal plane.

Yep & Yep... which is why I adore it, I just wondered if the Equinox would be an upgrade or not to bother :)
