Seeing the title, I thought this post was going to be interesting, but it wasn't what I was expecting, still very interesting though

I'm sure your inspirational story is very familiar to a lot of EMSers, me included.

Having such a sounding board as EMS available 24/7 full of enthusiastic like minded people has to be the way to go for us all to learn more and share our experiences. It has certainly spurred me on more during the 3 years I've been a member than possibly at anytime in my similar nearly 50 years of interest. It certainly takes me back to my early childish excitement of first discovering this fascinating universe. :)

I'm so glad you are having a great time Stephen, keep posting and share some of those 50 years worth of experience with our new members.

Experience counts a lot in astronomy as there is so much to learn and understand

I've been doing this for about 15 years and even I didn't know about barlow lenses, just goes to show you learn something new everyday.

Much the same for me smithysteve... All the years I would be only person with interest in the night sky n our universe etc.

Internet has changed that alot.

Astronomical scopes were hard to find, and Astro magazines.. I used to order astronomy mag from broadhurst,Clarkson n fullerscopes in London to be posted from them.

My first proper scope I put together after a train trip to them for my parts... Travelling back on train with what looked like a large "drainpipe"..

Very interesting and thought provoking.

In my job I do tend to visit a lot of homes and come across people with telescopes who say they say they have an interest in astronomy but either cant get their new kit to work or would like to do more. I always push them towards the forum and what EMS members can do  (help with kit questions etc or even coming over to see your set up ) Robs very good at that,  but  I never find any of them ever join    maybe there's a fear or interpretation in getting together thus making it feel like there's no one out there

just on a footnote to this question   I am alone tonight!! wife away at mothers scopes out clear-ish night possible and no work tomorrow

In answer to your question  Stephen "Yes I am alone (tonight)  Brilliant!!!!  " :D

Nice post Stephen - the forum will always be around and we have the dark sites and many venues we can attend. But it is all up to us - we have the tools provided - we just need to make the arrangements to meet up. Never need to feel alone as an astronomer. :)

I haven't met anyone from here in real life, mostly because of distance but I find it a fascinating place to visit online.

I might come up one day, you never know. Just watch all the cars going the other way!

I've yet to stumble upon somebody with a huge amount of enthusiasm for astronomy, hoping to meet some of you guys at a dark site in the near future.

Meeting up is never a problem Martin - I had a couple of the chaps came round my place only a week or two ago - and I often pop round to see others. Just send a PM if you want to initiate getting something organised. :)
