A proper 3" focuser :)

My replacement focuser arrived.

TS were brilliant about it. They didn't charge any re-stocking fee and forgot to charge me for shipping, although I did of course pay to return the first focuser :)

This seems to have an even smoother movement than the previous one, and it will take 3" tackle without extra adapters.

Very pleased now :2thumbsup: ...

This focuser is designed to take a maximum load of 6 kilos hanging off the end of it!!! :o

I don't think the dob is likely to take that, but one can always try :D

Great looking focuser. TS are really good arn't they ? German efficiancy !

I can't see any mounting holes ; does it attach from underneath ie from tube to focuser ?

It will be me next with the new focuser. (Moonlite is on order from FLO)

Cheers Rob.

Bet you can't wait to fit your Moonlight :2thumbsup:

It takes four M6 bolts screwed from the inside of the upper tube assembly. The base is designed to bolt to either a flat surface or large radius.

That's a monster, 6kg, you are going to hang sandbags off the back end to balance it. If you need any stainless M6 bolts, let me know.

Might be the other way round - you've not felt the weight of my 20" mirror!  :o

At least I can calculate the approximate balancing situation as I plan the job.

Am I right in thinking that if you paint stainless, it causes it to corrode and flake off the paint? I thought that exposure to air and moisture is what prevents it from corroding.

Thanks for the offer Martyn, will let you know when I have something to bolt the focuser to :2thumbsup:

Hi Pete

"Am I right in thinking that if you paint stainless, it causes it to corrode and flake off the paint? I thought that exposure to air and moisture is what prevents it from corroding. "

The simple answer is no.

Paint will not stick to polished Stainless as its surface is too smooth. Hence why it is used in kitchens and the like.

If you want to paint it rub it down with 800 grit emery to rough up the surface.

I would also suggest you use an etching primer first so your finish coat has a decent surface to key into.

Thanks Graham that explains it now. :)

I have used etch primer, but only on aluminium prior to painting.

Was thinking about painting them matt black on the inside of the tube.

If you mean the Stainless Steel bolts for the focuser then try soaking the heads in bleach they should turn black.

WARNING WARNING WARNING

do this outside and do not breath in the fumes that it will give off.
