Image processing software

I've been accumulating quite a few points on iTelescope over the past few months and now have up to 18 hours of imaging available using their smaller scopes.

Since the sky hasn't been allowing much visual recently, I had a dabble with iTelescope last night and scheduled several different imaging sessions with some Takahashi's in New Mexico. I programmed their 106 and 150 refractors and an Epsilon 250 astrograph, and have just finished and downloaded one of these sessions. Some more are due over the next few nights.

Currently I have no stacking or processing software on my new Windows 10 laptop.

I would really appreciate your advice on simple to use and preferably free or cheap downloadable software for processing these images.

EDIT...

Looks like I should have put this in the Imaging Software section. Sorry, but I don't post in this bit very often

There are a few to try and a lot depends on your preference and willingness to dabble with various stuff. Since I shall assume they are DSO images and not planetary there are 3 I can recommend.

Deep Sky Stacker - Free - Will give fantastic results but can be quite in depth to use fully. Download Here: http://deepskystacker.free.fr/english/index.html

LT Image - Free - Very easy to use but limited capabilities. Download here: http://www.schoolsobservatory.org.uk/news/2012/ltimagev41

Salsa J - Free - Easy to use, more functions for data analysis. Download here: http://www.schoolsobservatory.org.uk/news/2012/ltimagev41

Out of the three I use DSS but have used the other two as well at work with the kids. LT Image is the easiest by far.

If you want to splash the cash and get something really versatile then Maxim DL is the other one I use. $599 download here: http://www.cyanogen.com/maximdl_buy.php

Whichever you use you really need either photoshop or Gimp to finish off with after the stacking etc. All of those above will get you so far though and do have image processing elements to them but are not designed to be pure image processing tools. For that you really do need something specifically designed for image processing.

I will give the freebies a try and leave the $599 one. I'm not expecting to out do Damian Peach you know, just having a play :D

I know this post is a month or two old , but for processing after using DSS I use Startools it's free too try the only thing you can't do is save final image , once you upgrade its about £30 , I could never get my head round PS and found it very time consuming , have a look on YouTube there's a a few tutorials, takes a bit of practice but has quite a few tools in its armoury there's also a Startools forum for advice , I found downloading practicing on other peeps data good for learning purely because it was better than I had at the time here's a link to M42 I used two imaging sessions processed in DSS then finished in Startools  well worth a look and Ivo the developer is very helpful on the forum for advice , http://www.startools.org/ hope this is useful.

Thanks David, that looks worth a try. A help forum for me to consult sounds useful. I have points totting up again on iTelescope so might have another go :)

I use Microsoft ICE for stacking solar system images, DSS for deep sky and GIMP for finishing off.

There's also Registax 5 and 6.

You can Google them.
