Surprised this hasn't been posted yet!

Prof. Stephen Hawking has backed a Russian billionaire's project for interstellar travel using an Earth based laser to propel small computer chips to the nearest star, and reckon they could reach there within 30 years of them launching!

Pretty promising stuff, even if there is still a long way to go with the technology.

Of course, you have to ask, assuming they do this how much practical instrumentation could be included and of course most importantly how effective a transmitter (and of course attendant power source) could be included.  Otherwise (and Im as positive a space nut as anyone, I just don't think an open mind should let your brain fall out) how worthwhile would this be beyond a publicity stunt.

I have to confess to reading that statement in Stephen Hawkins voice in my head...
