Please boot up so you see the screen you posted which had one item on it called VGA MODE - please select this and continue. Let us know what happens.    This mode will run everything but very large icons as it will revert to std 640x480 (if I remember XP) mode. If this works you should be able to reset the Display Properties in control settings.   FYI http://www.playtool.com/pages/safemode/safemode.html

Hi Clive

Nothing happens .

Tried it several times yesterday with and without the external screen. :(

Long shot this one....

With the power off, remove the RAM from the laptop, give the contacts a clean (soft cloth only) and make sure it seats correctly when you put it back. Then power on..

Then I am afraid its a cmd line jobby - you could try chkdsk /f C   from CMD MODE:     in case you kept crashing/power off and it has corrupted something on the disc. I am assuming you only have a C:\

If not then maybe its a non destructive XP install as per this link but only if no one else can find a solution.  https://www.winhelp.us/non-destructive-reinstall-of-windows-xp.html  You wont loose files BUT it will revert to whatever is on the CD so any Service Packs will have to be reinstalled. :(

NOTE the Windows VGA Mode can take 30-40 mins(or more)  to load as its reverting to basic drivers for lots of things including the disc drive - you just have to watch the disc activity.

Hope you get it sorted in time Graham.

These things can be so frustrating and sometimes seem to defy all logic.

Good luck

Cheers Pete.

Well the VGA did not work, left it running for a couple of hours but to no avail.

Took it into work with me this morning to see if the computer geeks can do anything with it.

Well that is very true Stephen.

That is why I have handed it over to a repair shop today. :D

A really big thank you to all that tried to sort this for me.

I bit the bullet and took it into a repair shop today on my way home from work.

This spotty young lad who I thought had stopped in on his way home from school served me.

After I explained what had happened he proudly announced with a grin from ear to ear  " No Problem we will soon sort that. Can you wait for ten minuets. " :P

I looked at him in disbelief and laughing said " I doubt that but I would love to see it"

After Five he returned with a very sheepish look and announced " You couldn't leave that with us could you, it is more than I thought it was going to be." :blush2:

So is open circuit board surgery for it tomorrow to find out just what the hell has happened.

Further updates as they happen.

Doubtful as it will do a full graphics test without trouble.

Well at least you tried everything that *usually* works. Hope it's not an ££ fix, I got my old Dell XP lappy off Ebay for £30 with 1gig extra memory and an upgraded HDD. It's still working now :)

Just had a text from the repair shop.

Got to do a reinstall to fix XP.

Hopefully I can do a non destructive repair then I will only have to reinstall service pack 3.

All that hassle just for changing screen settings!

Glad it's all sorted.

Just a pity you missed using it for the transit.
