Popular Post Smithysteve Posted July 6, 2016 Popular Post Share Posted July 6, 2016 I started with Saturn the planet and though seeing was not brilliant and Saturn was low, I was happy to make out the Cassini division and 5 of its moons, Hyperion, Titan, Rhea, Tethys and Dione. I spent the next 20 minutes trying to see Mimas and Enceladus. I tried several eyepieces but failed to do so before Saturn disappeared behind a neighbour’s roof! When I checked them out later, this was not entirely surprising considering Mimas was at mag +13.4 and Enceladus was mag +12.4 ☺️ I will persist another night. On to Saturn number two, ‘The Saturn nebula’ NGC 7009, in Aquarius, at mag +7.8. This was a first for me, I did not expect to be able to see it but it was very bright and jumped out at you in comparison to all the stars surrounding it. It was small but unmissable and a great object to see! I am surprised Messier did not pick this one up! Sir William Herschel spotted it first in 1782, and Lord Rosse named it the Saturn Neb in 1850… I went afer the *Cocoon neb, IC 5146, a bright nebula in Cygnus, mag +7.19. but failed to see it with and without filters…? I then went for several personally unseen Messiers low to the south whilst I had the opportunity… These ones I bagged: M8, Lagoon Nebula, Sagittarius, mag +6.0, could see neb + lots of stars M16, Eagle nebula, Serpens, mag +6.4, saw a small amount of nebula and open cluster of stars. M17, Omega Nebula, Sagittarius, mag +7.0, large smudge, looked like a galaxy… M18, OC, Sagittarius, mag +7.5 M20, Triffid Nebula, Sagittarius, mag +9.0, Very faint. M21, OC, Sagittarius, mag +6.5 M23, OC, Sagittarius, mag +6.9 M24, Star Cloud, Sagittarius, mag +4.6, hundreds of stars! M26, OC, Scutum, mag +9.3, a fine open cluster. M75, glob, Sagittarius, mag +8.52, very small and faint… Then, much higher up from the horizon… M2, glob, Aquarius, mag +6.46, big bright and dense… M15, glob, Pegasus, mag +6.19, big and bright! That bumped up my seen Messier numbers to around 82. Plenty to do yet though!? These I tried for but could not get to for trees and houses: ? *M54, glob, Sagittarius, mag +7.3 *M62, glob, Ophiuchus, mag +6.6 *M69, glob, Sagittarius, mag +8.9 *M70, glob, Sagittarius, mag +9.6 I finished off the session with… M27, Dumbbell neb, Vulpecula , mag +7.6, looking huge and bright! M57, Ring neb, Lyra, mag +9.3, impressive as always… ? In the dome, LX200, and mostly the 20mm Nag on DSO’s, but went down to the 12mm Delos on Saturn… Thanks for reading ?? Cheers! Doc Posted July 6, 2016 Share Posted July 6, 2016 Wow what a haul Stephen. Some cracking objects there, did you use a filter with the nebulas? M17 was a lovely nebula, I will be going back to this... It looked very big, like a fat brush stroke of grey against the background, I was impressed! the ones I cannot get to should be available if I start out a half hour earlier... I will persist! ? Its always a pleasant surprise and a huge delight to see stuff. Of late I have seen many objects for the first time, I am trying to get to see as many things as I can, but I will be returning to study several of them a bit closer. i love DSO's, the nebs, galaxies and especially the globs. 4 hours ago, Graham said: Sounds like you had a great time there Stephen.
