New type of power souce.

I managed to catch an episode of Inside Science on Radio 4 last night and they had an item which was about a new type of battery. This is a big step forward in sustainable power and although in the early stages of development, it definitely has massive potential. It might not be powering our mounts for a while, but there is usually someone who comes along and tweaks it until it it works just fine.

Interesting stuff Martyn.

Like you say, with a bit of tweaking it could be really good news, to help safely dispose of radioactive waste and produce a long life battery. And it is a British idea.

Looks good but very very early days. Plus Ron C would need the "Star of India" to power his kit - :laugh3::ph34r:

An amazing idea, partly solving two problems at least, as per the article, particularly useful in satellites and eventually... interstellar probes and spacecraft mebbe!

Interesting, that one would be a bit scarier, it runs on Plutonium but as it seems pretty much armoured, it looks like it is going fare better than the host.

I wonder what they have that is going off behind the shadows, that is usually ten years in front of what we see on the street. It would be good if one day someone is able to break the energy monopolies and we can benefit from cheap, reliable and green energy. Particularly if in this case it uses and recycles dangerous nuclear waste.

Here's the BBC 4 program link.

But it did have the advantage of not having the batteries run and and the low risk of problems with surgery - hell beats dying. Plus they probably glowed in the dark(joke)

" break the energy monopolies" - totally agree but you are dealing with organisations that are pretty nasty and powerful. You should read about the cryogenic energy storage of solar/wind already working(small project) no use for Astro battery replacement but very clean no dangerous materials and uses std known components. Just required "the will" and long term planning!
