Christmas / New Year Meet anyone ?

24 posts in this topic

Hi folks,

Anyone fancy getting together over the festive period for a spot of stargazing ?

I was thinking of Thursday 29 of Friday 30 December up at Belper darksite. (or Wymeswold if you'd rather)

It would be nice to get out ; i'll be sick of food and booze by then !!

Merry Christmas, and a happy, prosperous 2017 to all my fellow EMS astro buddies if you can't make it out.

Have a good one ! :)

Showing mainly clouds both evenings & getting milder, according to WeatherPro.

Unsure which day looks the best ?

Sorry I missed this post - I have been AWOL from EMS for the past week or 2, work and other commitments - I have, however, had some good clear nights in the back garden.

Tonight is a no-go.

Thick freezing fog here at Darley Abbey at present. Getting milder + cloudier later.

WeatherPro states cloud + mild temperatures for Friday too with possibly the odd clear spell.

So its not looking good.

Are there any other planned meets due in the near future ?

The only planned meet (as long as I pull my finger out and sort it), is the last Saturday of the month, monthly meet, all other meets are on a adhoc basis.

How about Monday night, as the forecast looks the most favourable then?

I've not been up in years and would like to do some observing, if I can still remember how.

I'm free Monday PM Kev.

Weather forecast looks great.

I'd sooner get up there earlier if that suits.

I would have come along myself, but I have had a crap Xmas/New Year full of snot and a heavy cold. :negative:   On the bright side I still have a nearly full drinks cupboard, I just haven't been interested. :o

It's back to school tomorrow, so I might be in bed for nine.

Have a good one! :telescope:

I doubt I'll stay any later either. Just a handful of DSOs and my eq platform to fine tune.

See you there.

Just back and had an enjoyable nights observing. Great to meet Rob and his setup.

Eq platform worked as well as could be expected, but found nothing new Messier-wise. M109 is really proving to be uber elusive!

Still, i got my first Venus and NGC 2244 views through my dob, albeit with zero perceivable nebulosity with the latter. I can't grumble about that!

Regards,

Kev

Glad you managed to get up there guys, sorry I couldn't make it, was on call.

What was the ground like?

Darren : the ground was pretty decent, but was semi frozen which helped.

But certainly not muddy.

The entry point from the road is becoming an issue.

Cratered is the best way i can describe it. Can any of these craters be filled in ?

I don't wish to grumble or anything, but there will come a time where a smaller vehicle may become stuck on there.
