I'm with Dave Jewitt on this one. It could be more than one planet. It could even be a long-gone extrasolar object that perturbed the orbits. 

 

Finally, there's the question: if we have the technology to find it, why haven't we detected it already?

 

No doubt there are loads of other smaller trans-Neptunian objects to be found.
