Mayak fails

It seems the Russians attempt to create an artificial star has failed to deploy. I am not sure what I think about this, it's probably the fact that they have just chucked this up there without any consideration for other users of the night sky that I think is discourteous. At the brightness of it, it would have properly mucked up any subs it went through. That said it would have been something to see as well.

I'm not going to mourn the fact it didn't work. There's too much up there as it is without having a bit of gear that serves no real purpose except to say look at what we can do

Whether it had failed or not, I think it was a waste of time, effort and money, all for no useful reason.

Now it is just a useless breadbin sized missile doing 17000 Mph waiting to smash up something useful up there.

I hope they won't bother with a second attempt to put a dazzling beacon up there. But I bet they are planning to. :(
