A well deserved reward for the group, who in reality you would have thought of not having a cats chance in hell for securing the funding for this project. They not only persevered, but managed to produce LIGO, which is incredibly sensitive and has now proved gravitational waves do exist, now possibly for the forth time. (Awaiting final confirmation of two black holes merging 2 billion light years away). Here's the best write up I could find.

There's a lot of hard work being done on the frontiers of science, and this award is for pioneering stuff. :)
