Ditto Mike! It may not have beeen gravitationally bound to our solar system initially. Maybe they won’t hear anything from it, But If it started moving in a direction other than one predicted by Newtonian physics then this post section would go ballistic for a start! , or if another identical shaped object appeared on the same path, that would clinch it for me!

Imagine If it were slowly heading in our general direction - it would cause widespread alarm, - telescope sales would rocket! :D

Would rocket sales telescope?

It's a lump of rock. Had it gone into orbit round something in our Solar system, then it could show it had intelligent control, but it's still going like the clappers past us. Graham might have a point there though.

Fascinating article. I have been following this on another link. It will be interesting to discover more.

There is currently heated debate and frantic workings out if they can fund / build another Rosetta / Philae lander type project, NASA certainly think it's doable but is on the absolute limit of what is currently possible.

It would need the fastest rocket we currently have, estimates predict it will pass Neptune in 2 years, so they need to get a shift on if we are to catch up with it.

They also estimate that is has come from the Beta Carina system, all top stuff in my book, but slightly worrying that we didn't spot it until it got this close.
