Is afocal photography officially dead?

These days I only use it with my PST. PSTs are notorious for their short focus travel. Does anyone else still do afocal? I've taken a look at some of my ancient shots from 2004 to 2012 and, even though I say it myself, aren't bad. OK, my more recent efforts are better but I wonder, at times, if I had stacked multiple images, like I do now, whether my afocal shots would be as good as with prime focus photography or by using a webcam.

Where I found, in the past, was that afocal photography worked well with high magnification on the moon and planets.

Any thoughts?
