Picture of the Month January 2019

Another new year and quite a few clear nights had folks out imaging and we have a good selection to look through this month.

Comets, Asteroids, Meteors & Meteorites

Not the astro photography we are used to but its fascinating stuff Graham has been catching on his detector

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15451-this-weeks-selection-week-ending-25012019/

Deep Sky Objects

Derbyshire Dave started the year off with his Horsehead and Flame

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15382-horsehead-and-flame-nebulae/

A favourite at this time of year ,M45, by andyboy1970

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15402-m45/

Andy also gave us M42

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15411-m42/

ChrisP finished his M78

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15406-m78-finished/

and gave us a nice shot of M81 & 82

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15404-bodes-cigar-galaxies-m81-m82/

and a widefield of the Ha in Cass

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15407-cassiopeia-widefield-ngc7635ngc7538-m52-sharpless-157/

A firm favourite of mine ngc 891 nicely captured by 8472

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15420-ngc-891/

Ive always said the double cluster in Perseus reminds me of diamonds on black velvet and 8472s rendition reminds me of that nicely

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15456-caldwell-14/

dave.hardy2 gave us a Horsehead and Flame

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15478-the-horsehead-and-flame-nebulae/

Lunar

Quite a lot on the moon this month.

Firstly Graham was lucky enough to bag the eclipse, well done

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15439-for-those-that-missed-it-the-luna-eclipse/

I like Ibbos shot of the full moon prior to the eclipse

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15437-luna-20-1-2019/

and he also gave us a few shots leading up to full moon

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15422-luna-16-1-2019-ir642/

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15426-luna17-1-2019-ir642/

Andyboy1970 gave us a few close ups

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15410-moon-shots-14jan19/

Whoa, even I managed a quick lunar shot this month J

Sketching

Ah we have a sketching submission this month, good one.

Sunny Phil gave us a sketch of solar activity

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15458-the-sun/

Solar

Not the best time of year for solar observing/imaging but some have been out there

Ibbo

Graham

Widefield

Sunny phil was out photographing constellations

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15403-taurus/

A lunar halo from 8472

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15428-tonights-lunar-halo/

ChrisP gave us a shot of the Barnards Loop

https://www.eastmidlandsstargazers.org.uk/topic/15469-orion-horsehead-flame-and-barnards-loop-in-ha/

Well altogether there are some great images this month and as ever it isnt an easy job to do and I've been flipping through the images many times and its a close thing but there is one I keep coming back to for so many reasons:

·         I like the object

·         The image is nicely framed and processed, good colour.

·         Its been taken with minimalist kit, a Russian telephoto and a mirrorless camera.

·         Unguided

So 8472s shot of Caldwell 14 (Double Cluster) does it for me, well done Kev.

Crikey, doesn't seem 5 minutes since you did Decembers Phil! ?

So much great stuff to choose from, but that double cluster does look superb, well done Kev. ?

Hopefully I will be "in it to win it" at the end of February. ? Only joking, but I'm hoping I might just have a dismal token offering of an image by then. ?

Oh, thanks folks! - a fantastic variety of images this month. Especially as the weather has been so poor.

Great work from everyone.
