I joined a mining heritage walk at Winster in the Peak District two nights ago. Used to do a lot of caving and some mining, so was interested to see what was on offer. We did a really interesting walk around for about an hour and a half until we got to a shaft, which was in the back garden of one of the people. He explained it was about 300 foot deep, then went into his house and came out with some newspaper, which he lit, and then dropped down the shaft. It was truly amazing to watch, and my trusty iPhone recorded the event. I did wonder to give the title of this as "Comet Entering Black Hole"! Also you would have thought it would have better protection, those bars are so far apart any small animal could fall through them.
