I found this reading a post by Ivo Jager startools developer , it’s a chart covering canon Nikon and Sony cameras according to this my Nikon suggested value is 200 ISO but try 400 interesting article http://dslr-astrophotography.com/iso-values-nikon-cameras/ there is also a good article on star colour too

Yep, I remember reading that very article a while back. Very useful.

 

I forgot to mention I think your Nikon is what they call ISO invariant, Dave. Meaning there is nothing to be gained in cranking up the ISO to Canon-like levels.

 

You get to take advantage of the better dynamic range at low ISO whilst having low read noise levels too.

 

If you're into that kind of stuff, I highly recommend Bill Claff's excellent Photonstophotos.net website.

 

It's an amazing resource for camera sensor data.
