On the next clear night (when I can get out), assuming Orion is still visible, my next target would be M42 but perhaps I should concentrate on a wide field image just incase it's not there next year.

What we are saying is that we are hoping it went poof around 1378, give or take a good few years and the accuracy of determining it's distance.

It would be truly spectacular and totally ruin the constellation.

Instead of the 'Armpit of the giant' (which i believe is Betelgeuse's literal meaning)

how about 'The sore armpit nebula' ? 😉
