I was at uni when Comet West (1976) appeared so missed that one, so the last comet I remember seeing with a tail was Bennett (1970), viewed from my bedroom window overlooking Derby town centre to the east.

Hyakutake haad a massive tail.

When it passed polaris the tail strected to the horizon, but you had to look for it as it was not obvious.

The weather that march was wall to wall cloud for the month.

Derbyshire Dave

Remember Hale-Bopp well, particularly remember standing in Yorkshire looking at a reflection of it in the River Ribble near Settle. A fantastic time, thanks for remining us Steve!!!!!!!

You know how one cannot quite believe people who say they have never seen Star Wars well ... I never saw Hale Bop.

Life got busy and stressful and I had already been away from astro for a few years so it never came on my radar at the time.

Now Bennett and West I do remember.

I wish it had been a few years later. I nicked my wife's compact digital camera from Dec 31st 2003 and never looked back. I followed it in 20x50 bins for months before it became visible to the unaided eye.
