I see that Sky and Telescope has reported that, due to 2 recent  suspension cable failures, the iconic Arecibo radio telescope is to be decommissioned.

Aw that's a shame. I suppose it was getting on a bit and with the new base array systems you don't need a whopping big dish anymore. I wonder how freely China will share information from theirs.

Yes, i saw that on a Facebook astro group i follow.

I believe the final stanchions which was holding it all together (a lot of weight above the main 'dish') collapsed this morning and it was only a matter of time by all accounts.

A sad day indeed, and especially for all the staff (over 100) who worked there.

 

It was an iconic structure.
