Popular Post +Ibbo Posted December 9, 2021 Popular Post Share Posted December 9, 2021 Thanks to Derbyshire Dave for the suggestion and the company on a little trip up to Thorne to collect some of the aluminium castings we use provided the ideal excuse for a diversion to Blacktoft sands Nature reserve on the banks of the Ouse. We set off in unexpected sunshine a moan that we had both put on a layer or 2 too many as it was rather warm. As we went up the motorway the sunshine was in short supply. We collected the castings and proceded through the town of Goole accompanied by the usual schoolboy hummour. Once we arrived the weather was back to cool so the extra layer was now welcome . The reserve itself is ideal for a couple or 3 hours in winter as it is about 1 km and has 6 ( IIRC) hides that are open. In the second hide we saw a bird we could not ID and after some consulation of the pocket guide I have we thought the nearest match was a common sandpiper but not reallysure -wrong it was the Larry of the title a rare vistor from Russia, Iran or Iraq. couple of the best shots of a bad bunch Also seen were peregrine, sparrowhawk, marsh harrier, kestrel, starling,buzzard lapwing, white tailed lapwing, golden plover, snipe, shoveller, shellduck,fieldfare, redwing, blackbird, long tailed tit, mute swan, teal, widgeon, magpie, wood pigeon,mallard and few undentified LBJ's.
