For those who havent't seen it, here some historic images of the scope..

I've read (in a BAA short paper from 1996) that the 18" (457 mm) mirror is only 38 mm thick.  In terms of mass to thickness ratio, that would be equivalent to making a 130 mm mirror with just 3 mm thick glass!

that's a great shot, and the photos are great too, how old is the scope?

Thats a fabulous looking telescope Dave.

I had no idea such a beast resided there.

 

I've looked through the 24" at MSAS (Sherwood) a couple of times but this looks equally impressive.

They use a fork mount on that scope though (on a wedge) rather than the German Equatorial you have here. Very impressive.

OK. Let's do that Rob. Let's try and get a clear night. We're there every Friday night if you want to meet the gang, otherwise I have access myself . I'll be rusty in using the scope myself, so let me get a couple of practices in first
