I reckon your right Phil, the Towa is sharper but the 1845 scope is pretty darn close.

I like the comparison. My vote goes for the Towa as well. The Smith is still impressive though.

Yep the towa has the edge but it has a better focuser. Ive fitted a dual speed cayford to it so it's a bit more predictable than the Smith internal R&p. I used the same settings for stacking and sharpening so processing was as close as I could get.

 

So I reckon it's a valid comparison. The Towa has coated objective so a slight advantage there.

The lens on the Smith is a contact doublet signed M Pillischer who was a 19th century instrument maker, known for microscopes but dabbled in other optics so they k ew what they were doing.

 

Very pleased with it, its always a gamble with antique optics.

I wish my eyes were good enough to be able to see much of a difference !!

Maybe the Towa is a tad sharper on the top left part of the crescent ?
