A comparison between the 1845 James Smith 3.25" refractor and the 1975 ish Towa 339 80mm refractor with the same camera (Olympus OMD EM1) The Towa has the edge(sharp across the complete subject) I reckon but the Smith aint far behind. 1st up the Towa 80mm F15 Now the Smith/Pillischer 3.25" F18 Each scope in turn fitted to HEQ5. +TasKiNG, +Glafnazur, +Ibbo and 4 others 7 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

philjay Posted January 18 Author Share Posted January 18 Yep the towa has the edge but it has a better focuser. Ive fitted a dual speed cayford to it so it's a bit more predictable than the Smith internal R&p. I used the same settings for stacking and sharpening so processing was as close as I could get. So I reckon it's a valid comparison. The Towa has coated objective so a slight advantage there. The lens on the Smith is a contact doublet signed M Pillischer who was a 19th century instrument maker, known for microscopes but dabbled in other optics so they k ew what they were doing.
