It's simple, don't open attachments from friends no matter how well you know them, keep your software patched up to date and always have antimalware measures installed.

There should never be a need to heed a "virus warning", you should always exercise caution on the internet.

Virus Scanners (install one only, not all)

Other (use one, none or both)

http://www.safer-networking.org/ (features a nice immunise feature, which writes bad addresses to your hosts file and protects you)

Firewalls

No need for an expensive solution, just make sure yours is enabled:

I prefer this: http://www.comodo.com/ it's free for home use and really works. I tried all the big brands and have had problems, this I have been using for 5 years and have never had a problem. They are a large company who provide top level protection for some major companies in the US, they are so confident in the service they provide that they offer the home version for free. (There is no time limit either).

This software was recommended to me by a pc technician years ago and I have never looked back....
