This morning I sent an email to Baader, which if you have done, you'll know navigating there German site is far from a doddle, even the send or delete after completing your message is in german. Lol. I was surprised at the reply, I thought it quite light hearted and educational. I do worry when buying things, that they will shortly be superseded by the next best thing, so after no stores having stock for weeks, it got me wondering, how old is the MK3 Baader zoom and will I be kicking myself next month as a newer model is announced, so for piece of mind for myself and you, here is the response....

Hi I am fairly new to astronomy and am looking to buy a Baader Hyperion 8-24mm Clickstop Zoom, but can't find stock, I was wondering if this is because you are bringing out a new model soon? I'm not sure how old the MK3 is? I love the idea of this eye piece and love Baader products as they are of incredible quality, I am worried about buying this product then something new Being announced. Thanks, Mark Harper.

Dear Sir,

well - sorry for the difficulty with the send-button - we are sort of a bunch of hillbillies here.

We are preparing the next production run. There are no changes in the makes.

Sorry - it will take about four to five more weeks - it is a very complicated eyepiece.

The lens surfaces of this eyepiece must be polished with much greater care than on

any fix focus model, because the optics must work perfectly - in spite of the fact

that three of the four lens groups inside the eyepiece are changing their distances

towards each other when changing the focal length. Most competitors in this price

range cannot offer this kind of care for the optical polish - without raising the price

considerably.

The Hyperion Zoom offers a level of complexity that is normally only possible to attain

when buying worlds most renowned brands such as Zeiss and Leica.

Fortunately the demand for this very eyepiece is large enough to maintain that extremely

low price. On the other hand we cannot just pre-produce several thousand units and put

them on the shelf. We are a very small enterprize and must be very careful with our budget.

It its a very good response, and reassures you that they care about their product, and the high standards they have.

A response that shows a lot of customer care - very happy to explain why it's not currently in stock - and a bit of detail about how the company operates, levels of QA employed, and budgeting info too. You wouldn't get that from Tesco if 2ltr bottles of milk disappeared from the shelves lol. Good one Mark. :)

Have you tried Rother Valley Optics Mark ?


 


I was interested in a pair two or three weeks ago & they didn't tell me it wasn't in stock ?
