philjay Posted January 18, 2012 Share Posted January 18, 2012 As we have quite a few newcomer members and maybe we will get more as a result of Stargazing Live how about the EMS do an introduction to the hobby at the CC in the near future? I was thinking of a meet where we could have a quick intro to the hobby and gear. Then have a general Q&A session with the more experienced members helping the newcomers. Also bring your new scope along and we will show you how to set it up and a brief intro into using it. This can be done whatever the weather. We could advertise a little further afield on SGL for any newcomers that arent in the EMS as well. As to when it would be held, well it would need to be reasonably soon as to have the stargazing live impetus still with us and also have a decent dark night in case its clear. philjay Posted January 18, 2012 Author Share Posted January 18, 2012 I think with the members we have and any newcomers that are interested that would be enough because of the venue limitations, I wasnt thinking of a major event, just a helpful event that may raise awareness of the EMS elsewhere as well. red dwalf Posted January 19, 2012 Share Posted January 19, 2012 sounds like a great idea Phil, although i might be hard up to make the 28th as i`m on lates but will work on it, cough, cough, i know there`s a few guys interested in a tutorial of how EQ mod works and is set up also, i know it`s alittle advanced for newcomers but i`m sure it could be added towards the end of the talks, maybe the evening could be broken down into talks about mounts and how to set up different scopes and uses eyepieces different software and uses that are usefull these seem to be some of the major issues new people to the hobby ask for advice on just a thought. It all depends onwho comes and at what stage they are at, I dont want to do a basics intro when most folks already know where and what to look at. That program Rob was similar to what I was thinking of and tailoring it to who comes. Intro 15 mins Scopes different types and what they are best at - 15-20 minutes ish Mounts 15-20 minutes ish Accessories - diagonals, eyepieces etc 10 mins Putting it all together 15-20 minutes Software, planetarium - demo 15 mins Then for those who have brought their own scope along we can do individual teach ins with the more experienced members doing one to ones How does that sound? The one to ones after the short talks will need a few experienced members, numbers depending on how many folks bring their kit? If there is only Felix with his 200 then he will have our undivided attention Thanks for the offer Damian but I think maybe interfacing is a bit advanced for the object of the 28th however that would be a great subject for another meeting, how about it?
