No it's not really dark, Belper is much darker. It took us ages to find somewhere to meet, you wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a suitable place. It's quite, safe and easy to get to. It's pretty dark, the milky way can just be seen, but the main thing is that it's big enough for us all to meet and thats whats important.

Lol, trust me I can imagine, I've always wanted to photograph the Milky Way and have spent a great many hours/days looking for dark areas, nearer than Scotland, the next place I'm going to look is mid wales, not to far from that early warning place. This is my favourite tool; http://www.need-less.org.uk/#ukatnightsim hit this then scroll down to the night sky simulator, here you can search for dark areas via bortle rating. There's also a place on the east coast that has my eye....

Oh the March edition of Sky and Telescope touching on making your own telescope, I have it here as a free download if anyone wants it....

The problem is every piece of land belongs to someone, so really to find a place big enough and secure enough that you are not disturbed is very hard, you reallty need to see permission.

Hi Mark, if you fancy a two hour drive, just outside Ripon on the Pateley Bridge road, it gets real dark, particularly as you start to get up onto the moor.

We stayed at a campsite near to Winksley, it was that dark it was difficult to make out the constellations in the Milky Way.

I would go again.

I've never seen one in the flesh but I've also never heard a bad word said about his scopes.
