First an effort to find the outer halo of M31. For this we used 30 minute luminance subs at F5. We only shot 7 of them but the data was fabulous. Long subs at a dark site are the business. Two minute subs for the core. Around 13 hours all in.

And then an airing for the TEC140 Apo, which frames M42 nicely on the 11 meg chip. LRGB shot over two nights. Subs were 40 seconds, 5 minutes and 15 minutes, layer masked in Photoshop.

wow, great images again.  Olly you say on M42 you did 40s, 5 mins and 15 mins, how does that work, i know its for the core but would

like a bit more detail on process etc if you dont mind?

I've just done a piece on this for Astronomy Now, Sheila. It may be in the next issue, I'm not sure.

Basically you paste the processed short on top of the processed medium. Create a Layer Mask and paste the short onto the mask. Open a new window for the 'work in progress.' Blur the mask and then adjust the mask further in Curves while looking at the work in progress image. When you get what you like, flatten it. I've seen tutorials where the mask is modified in other ways but I prefer to stick to Blur, Levels and Curves. It's all about patience, this layer masking!

First time I've seen a widefield of M42 in which you can pick out the trapezium clear as a bell, along with all the other detail. Nice one Olly! :)

The trick is to use a quick Ha layer as luminance just for the tiny area around the Trap. Really tiny. It allows you to have small enough stars.
