At the request of many members, EMS will be hosting our very own Stargazing Live event in 2014.

The date is Sat 18th Jan 2014.

The event will open to the public at 6:30pm and close at 8:30pm. We have use of both the scout hut and cricket pavilion. Here's what is planned:

In the Scout Hut

  • A display of telescopes and binoculars with members on hand to explain about them to members of the public.
  • A slideshow / animation of images taken by our members (to include POTM winners plus others)
  • possibly other space related video clips
  • A handful of demonstrations of scientific principles for people to interact with
  • Possibly a short talk on something relating to the programs shown the previous week
  • Stellarium demonstration on a laptop, showing how it works etc (idea from Liegh)

In the cricket pavilion

  • Warm room environment for socialising
  • Light refreshments (supplied and organised by local scout group)
  • Ideally red lights if it's clear outside.

On the field

  • A selection of scopes with members to show public something of interest in the night sky.
  • "Star Tours" a guide to the constellations via star hopping and naked eye.

What we need from you:

We need people to bring scopes for inside the scout hut. We would like to have if possible one of each: Reflector, Refractor, SCT or similar and a pair of Bino's. Ideally the reflector would be a big Dob, the SCT on an EQ type mount, and the Refractor on either an AltAz or fork mount.

We need 3 or 4 people to set up outside if clear to show people something of interest in the sky.

Somebody willing to do a naked eye tour of the night sky pointing out the constellations etc.

Ideally somebody to do a short 10 or 15 min talk on something relating the programs.

This has been arranged with the BBC, Local Council and Local Scout Troop. Fingers crossed it should be on the BBC website very soon. Hopefully we should receive some handouts etc soon from the BBC too although these are not definite as supplies are limited.

So, who can help? Over to you!

I would think out on the field if that's okay unless you feel you would like to do the tour or a talk? :D

I will help out if needed - will leave the naked eye tour and talk to someone more knowledgeable though

Would you possibly be able to display and explain the SCT ?

I'll be an "outside" viewing person showing people stuff through the 200P if you like mike? Is on an NEQ6 so will stay in the eyepiece for ease of viewing :)

Spot on, this will help demonstrate the ease (or not) of use of similar scopes on different mounts (Daz with the dob)

I'm up for this Mike..10'' dob. Leave it up to you where to put me. Looking forward to this :)

Spot on thanks, can we wait and see which others we get before I decide where to stick you?

Put me down for this. I've got my 10" newt and 6" frac dual mounted on my skytee 2 on my home made carbon fibre tripod. Also get some

15 x 70 binos. I can do either inside or outside.

Artillery cannons look quite impressive!

Happy to help :)

Of course we will need some folks to generally mill about too, and everybody is welcome to come along anyway :)

I should be able to make this. Perhaps the EMS projector hooked up to Stellarium would be useful?

The projector will be in use already. However it might be possible to have a laptop set up to show people. Is this something you would feel comfortable with doing?

I could do that; or teach spherical trigonometry :)

We're more than happy for our gear to be on display, orion optics 10" dob, 6" frac on eq5, C8 on wedged fork mount.

Wayne is happy to mingle and discuss the basics, I'm 3 weeks post op so probably not up to much, assuming I can drive by then. :-/
