Did not realise the level of injury from this one:

For meteorites to make more of an impact here, they need to be larger.

For example, the asteroid that exploded over Chelyabinsk in Russia on 15 February 2013 was estimated to be about 19m wide.

It hit the atmosphere with energy estimated to be equivalent to 500,000 tonnes of TNT, sending a shockwave twice around the globe. It caused widespread damage and injured more than 1,000 people.

It was bad enough but there but for fortune it could have landed on a city and been a heck of a lot worse - Thought provoking.

Try reading this list of "air bursts" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_meteor_air_bursts - plus of course the famous Russian one with the picture of trees all flattened ;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event 10-15 MT (h-bomb size) - scary :o

Note the New York one of November 15, 1859 - like you said Ade "Thought provoking" . if that had hit New York the would have had to to changed the song "New York New York so good the had to name it twice" still I am sure Bruce Willis would have saved the day.

Just read about this in Astronomy Now. There is a link to video footage here:

http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/feb/24/meteorite-moon-largest-lunar-impact-recorded

It would be cool to be doing close up imaging of the moon when that happened. You'd imagine someone, somewhere, had a scope and a planetary camera or dslr at prime focus looking at the moon when it happened (assuming it was at night).
