Does anyone have the 3 volume set of, Burnham's Celestial Handbook,

and would you recommend it?

These 3 volumes are  rather old now and the author died in poverty.

I got a set for £15 about a year ago i guess off the internet (second hand and well thumbed like many books i buy).

They are packed with tables of data which i've not looked at, but the descriptive text is fascinating to read, and very detailed in places. Constellations, clusters, doubles, nebula, galaxies, they are all covered and described, and many with black and white photographic plates, or sketches, and numerous sketches of how things look in the eye piece.

I went on a second hand astro book buying frenzy at the time and got several books for that sort of price or much less. I now need a nice reading chair.

If you find a set for a bargain price, i'd get them; fascinating to dip into, and also an historic publication.

All three volumes are on amazon market place (second hand) for under £3 each; add on £2.80 p&p for them all, and you could get the set for under £12.

I did the same as James, got all three of Ebay for about £15, at least 3 years ago.

As you say they make good reading even if you never look at half of what they tell you to.

I'm not familiar with these books. Are they aimed at beginners or seasoned amateurs?

They're great for beginners as long as you start with volume 1 from the beginning. It's the greatest work ever written.
