Processing astro pics

I have asked before if there is a piece of software specific for use after stacking my pics. I have contemplated purchasing Photoshop but have you seen the price? There must be another program that will do the job. The trouble for me is that PS offers so much that I'm sure only a fraction of the program would be used most of the time. I've looked at Photoshop Elements but before I purchase anything I wonder if you could help and advise me please

i think that gimp  can be used as a processing program relating to astro images but if i remember correctly it only works in 8 bit.

there nebulosity also, you need to buy this but you can try the free version, a lot cheaper than photoshop and it is a good capture program as well

I have used Photoshop at work and for my own photos, astro and terrestrial and my vote goes for Photoshop. Have tried many others but the plug ins, including Noels Actions (dedicated astro plugins) make this software my favourite
