We would be looking for hook ups for everyone. Heating would be a much needed requirement.

Anymore for anymore?  So far, only 10 people have shown an interest.  I know its difficult considering there is no fixed dates yet but we need number to find a site big / small enough to cater for us but i understand you cant commit until we have some dates.

Like mentioned above, some people want warm and dry (tough one in this country) which would point to August but its lighter at nights, the kids are off school so could be difficult to find a place that will open just for us (so no lights on site) or they will ramp the price up considerably.

Takes us into September and October but we are getting into Kelling star party time here or its starting to get too cold depending where we go and people don't want to camp in October.

Tough call but we still need to know if you are interested in attending and we can then sure the dates up later.

I have spent a lot of time looking for somewhere to try out, the main problem being that any site large enough to have as many hook ups as we need, isn't able to let us have our own way or a field on our own. There are very few places that are dark enough, and not infested with kids running around everywhere.

As Daz mentioned, we will have to sort out dates when we have an idea of where we might be going and with how many campers, but at the moment the feedback has been pretty low. We need to know numbers, as if we book a site that will cater for fifteen and twenty or more book, the it isn't going to be a happy situation.

I'll post some idea's for sites when I have got it down to a shortlist that will deliver what we are looking for.

If anyone has any idea's, please let me know.

We are looking for somewhere dark, allows dogs, and has an adequate amount of hook ups.

I'd be interested.

I quite liked the Anderby site last time but it was surprisingly busy for the time of year.

South Yorkshire stargazers had a do at this place a couple of years ago:

I didn't have anything to do with the booking but we had the field to ourselves and there were hook-ups (I don't know how many).

Not sure how I missed this, maybe needs in the info box we have above the shoutbox sometimes? I'm down, cant do very end of october weekend, nor start of december but other than that anything is good.

Can't really remember how dark trentfield was as it was cloudy the whole time! Apart from the power station there's not much around the area

The nearest good dark(ish) patch for most of us is seems to be between Grantham & Spalding: http://www.lightpollutionmap.info/#zoom=11&lat=6956902.08129&lon=-56212.09681&layers=B0TFFFTT

Google maps says a place called Ingoldsby is in that area & the post code is NG33 ish: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Ingoldsby,+Grantham,+Lincolnshire+NG33/@52.8461064,-0.4716458,12z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x487824a31bb16903:0x5945619dbc959376

So searching for campsite is that patch: http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/calcdist.asp?bar=&shop=&restaurant=&md=10&l=52.8300224&lg=-0.5440817

turns up this place: http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=11406

being the first one I've looked at - there are some more too. This is a small site with 12 hookups & few facilities for kids (it says).

"........Water is available from a tap at the back of the pub near to a grey waste drain.............."

Doesn't sound so great for astronomy if there is a pub since that would imply folks coming and going by car until late and I am guessing they have lights etc....

Maybe interested if Lewis will allow (he has talked about this) I found Clumber Park, Notts....anyone know it? tent pitches have no HU but they have camping pods with electric and heating. It says there's a C&C site (no experience of C&C) This is the description:

Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire

‘At night the absence of light pollution near Clumber Park provides an excellent opportunity for stargazing or the chance to see nocturnal wildlife. When the main gates close to the public anyone who is camping has the park to themselves, much like the Dukes of Newcastle in years gone by.

Any good?

Only 12 hook-ups Mike - In October we would be the only folks coming back from the pub!

That was just a quick 10 minute look to demonstrate the method:-

1) Find darkest local spots on light pollution map 2) Look for nearby camp-sites. There are several other sites in that area.

I had a look on Google maps to see where it is etc. The pub car park is at the rear of the pub so cars coming and going to the pub would be lighting up the field that is the camping area. It's not the end of the world I know, but less than ideal.

All,

I am trying to narrow dates down, August I think is just going to be difficult to find a place with the kids being off, also it will be light if not "astro" dark, so imaging / observing is neigh on impossible. September is Kelling which lots of us attend, I`m not sure if all us could do 2 star parties a month, would the other half allow it????? so it is looking like October.

I have 2 blocks of dates in mind....

8th, 9th, 10th + 11th October.

or

15th, 16th, 17th + 18th October.

I have picked these dates as the 1st block is the new moon and the second block the moon sets at 19:00 so is not an issue anyway.

So now we potentially have some dates, anybody else interested?

Also, just to keep you all in the loop, we have tired numerous places, some have said no, others wont allow rally's or large groups, some don't have EHU, some don't allow dogs ETC, so picking a site that caters for all is difficult, Clumber park and Rufford park were a no also (I know somebody mentioned them) as I tried them 1st.

With these dates in mind is anybody else interested in attending, we have approx 10 people so far?
