Galactic Core with a compact, Australia

Seeing the Milky Way the other night reminded me of this picture I took back in 2012. It's not a technically good image by any stretch of the imagination, but I like it.

We were on honeymoon in Australia and spent a couple of nights at Ayers Rock. One of the excursions there is a night time barbeque out in the desert, including half an hour where they turn off the lights and a guide gives a tour of the stars. As you can imagine, there is no light pollution and the sky is phenomenal - thousands of stars, in alien patterns I'd never seen before.

I had a passing interest in astronomy back then but hadn't looked into anything seriously. I got out my compact camera, set it to a 60 second exposure, put it on the floor, roughly pointed it towards the Milky Way, and waited to see what happened.

I was blown away when I saw the result on the screen - it was faint but there was the galactic core, with dust lanes and bright bits and hundreds of stars. I'd always assumed you needed loads of expensive equipment to capture anything like that (turns out you just need dark skies...). Sure, it's noisy and there are star trails, but I suspect this image plays a large part in why I do this today, so I thought I'd share :)

It's amazing how little gear you actually need to get an inspiring first shot like that. Good one Andy :)

That was a great result considering the spontaneous capture method.

A brill experience and a photo to remind you of it. The sky must have looked awesome!

Thanks for sharing.

(And good to see you at WW on Saturday night, we had a nice old chat!)

Thanks, it was nice to chat to both of you at WW! I stupidly forgot to bring my camera on Saturday, otherwise I might have had something else to post. Oh well, sure the clouds will part again one day :)
