Mercury transit

I wasn't going to post this, and nearly put the paper in the bin, but here goes...

First time sketching at the eyepiece, had to start somewhere. Hopefully your monitor will show the subtle shade of penumbra I drew in, as I saw it around the larger triple spot group.

I sketched the transit on a quick break from work this afternoon using the ST120 and my big ES 9mm 120 degree eyepiece in the 2" Baader erect image Amici prism. I know it is a bit crap, but this is how I saw it. Hopefully some others will remember it like this, probably upside down and/or left/right reversed in their scopes. In the eyepiece, Mercury stood out as a perfect circle, in contrast to the three main sunspots which were slightly irregular in shape. The other sunspots were tiny black pinpricks. Couldn't quite reproduce it exactly as I wanted to, but with a bit more practice I might improve. Didn't see the point in drawing it with the eyepiece field stop since that would be over three and a half times the diameter of the sun in this 120 degree ep - 1.8 degrees at 67x...

That's pretty much how I saw it Pete, that is a very good start, and I am glad you shared it ?

Glad you had time to enjoy the experience too!

You would have needed an A3 sheet to get the field stop in! ☺️
