European Hornet ??

Spotted this dead on the path around Rutland water today I think it’s the European species 

Hornet?

Yes, the European variety. Its the UKs largest 'social' insect.

Yellow with brown body rather than the black of a wasp.

And an orangey yellow band across the rear of its head.

 

Pretty sedate and placid as long as you don't start attacking their nest !

They generally prefer woodland areas away from the urban sprawl.

I bet that could have been nasty, probably even after death if you touched that sting.

Is this a specialist subject of yours Rob? You seem to know a lot about wasps and bees, as you've talked about them in other threads. ?

Its an interest, yes, but i'm no expert.

My interest was sparked when we had a hornets nest

over the road from us about 5 years ago

 

I'm more interested in telescopes though........! ?
