Problem with NEQ6

Recommended Posts

I am having a problem with my NEQ6 mount.

When I am using the direction arrows on the h/set, all is well it moves without a problem in both Dec and Rt Asc.

But when I use the h/set for star alignment, the RA moves OK but the Dec stops after a few seconds and just makes a noise!

Now I know mechanically the mount is OK so what's going on?? Is it the h/set??

I'm not sure on this so help would be appreciated please?

Have you tried reducing the maximum slew rate? If the NEQ6 has stepper motors, it could possibly be the dec motor stalling at a high slew rate?

I'm not sure if the slew rate setting that you can set using the handset applies to just the direction controls on the handset or also to the 'goto' slew rate. If it only applies to the handset controls, try setting it to the maximum and see if you get the same problem when moving using the handset controls as when doing a 'goto'.

Moves at setting 9 without a problem, but I just ran an alignment set up OK but I'll wait for a clear sky and see how we go!!

There's nothing worse than an intermittent problem - it could be so many things. If it's working at the moment, don't move anything! 😆

When it stops moving the noise is like a dull screaming noise yes ???

It is caused by the worm gear having a tight spot in it and jamming the motor.

Could be caused by the sudden change in temp or a grain of dirt / sand being in the worm teeth.

A hard dried out bit of grease and the list goes on.

You need to slacked off the 2mm grub screw in the front of the worm housing ( the curved end ) and tighten the rear grub screw ( in the straight sided end).

When I say slacken and tighten I am talking about a quarter of a turn max.

The reason it does not happen when you slew with the direction arrows is because it slews a lot slower than when it is on a go to command e.g. star alignment and uses far less power thus allowing the motors to overcome the tight spot.

If your problem persists you can send it down to me and I will sort it for you.

Alignment worked well and the guide graph has improved as well! Hazy cloud and a nearly Full Moon don't help!!

Well I don't know, I powered up the rig at lunchtime and it found all 3 star alignments (roughly, as I can't see them in daytime!)

Hopefully I'll try again tonight although that Moon is a pain in the ****!!
