Is it worth forking out a around £150 - £200 on an observing chair?

As the title states - is it worth forking out a around £150 - £200 on an observing chair? I had a great observing session the other week the only thing that slightly spoilt it was some of the awkward positions at the eyepiece. I have been using my wife's perching stool.

I think it's important to be relaxed and comfortable when observing. It is definitely conducive to better observation as you aren't distracted by what you're sitting on. So, yeah, probably.

Thanks Steve.

My dad was the carpenter/joiner in the family unfortunately I didn't inherit his wood crafting skills, if I tried this I'd end up with some wooden mutant monstrosity.

I use one of these and I know a few other do as well. You more perch than sit but perfectly adequate for long observing sessions.

Thanks Andy, that looks ideal and I have just ordered one 🙂

This is what I have and has always been comfortable to use, bearing in mind I have a bad back.  Just one bolt pulls out to adjust the height and I don't bother putting the nut back on as the bolt won't come out while in use.  Quite a few folk use these and it won't break the bank.

Edit, just seen it's the same as Andy posted, so another vote!

Just for reference, this is what i use Dave.

This is a recent post from SGL about the same thing.....

This is what i use : a 'Meychair' musicians stool. Quite a bit cheaper than the BB chair (or it was)

Its very sturdy goes up / down with a 250mm range and will tilt side to side.

FLO at one time used to stock them, but no more. But its still possible to buy direct from Deutschland.

Yes, its pretty good considering my oversized behind on top of it.

Best thing about it is how quickly you can adjust it.

It can be raised / lowered in a second : theres no pins or fiddly adjustments to make.

Its perhaps a little heavy, but its solidly built and built to last.

I wouldn't be without mine. My back hurts after a few minutes observing if i'm not sitting comfortably. And it helps to keep me steady. I use one of these.

I've painted it silver and recovered the seat in white leatherette cos I got fed up of tripping over it. Why do they make these things invisible in the dark! It's not perfect and sometimes if I catch it wrong with my backside the seat just vibrates its way down like the old monkey on a stick toys. I've put a jubilee clip with a wing tightener off an old hosepipe tap attachment on one leg so I can fix it in one position if I want but once I'm sitting on it it won't drop.

I was looking at the Sky-Watcher chair a while back but couldn't find it in stock anywhere.

I used the new chair for a session observing doubles last night and it made it a much more enjoyable session 🙂
